How to Assess Oracle EBS Customizations Before Cloud Migration
Migrating from Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) to Oracle Cloud Applications (Fusion) isn’t just a technical upgrade—it’s a transformation. One of the most critical and often underestimated parts of this journey is assessing customizations. Over the years, organizations have tailored their EBS environments with custom reports, workflows, forms, and extensions to meet specific business needs. But not everything needs to move to the cloud. Some customizations become obsolete, while others can now be addressed with built-in cloud functionality.
This blog outlines a practical approach to assessing your EBS customizations before migrating to Oracle Cloud, helping you reduce technical debt, streamline operations, and align with modern best practices.
1. Identify All Existing Customizations
Before deciding what to migrate, you need a full inventory of what’s customized in your EBS environment. This includes:
Custom Forms (FMBs)
Custom Reports (RDFs, BI Publisher, Discoverer)
Workflows and Alerts
PL/SQL packages, procedures, triggers
Custom menus, responsibilities, and profiles
Third-party integrations
Use tools like Oracle Application Object Library (AOL) tables, custom code repositories, or Oracle-provided utilities (like Customization Analyzer or EBS Upgrade Companion) to extract and document this data.
2. Classify and Categorize the Customizations
Once identified, classify the customizations into categories such as:
Mandatory (business-critical)
Nice to have
Obsolete or redundant
Replaced by standard cloud functionality
This helps stakeholders prioritize what needs to be rebuilt, replaced, or retired.
3. Evaluate Business Relevance in the Cloud Context
Many EBS customizations were created due to gaps in standard functionality. But Oracle Cloud Applications are built with industry best practices, modern capabilities, and built-in analytics. Before deciding to rebuild a customization:
Ask why it was created
Check if similar functionality is now standard in Oracle Cloud
Consider whether adapting business processes to the cloud's standard flow is a better option
This approach reduces custom development and long-term maintenance efforts.
4. Map Customizations to Cloud Equivalents
For viable customizations, determine how they can be translated in the cloud: EBS CustomizationOracle Cloud EquivalentForms (FMBs)Visual Builder Apps, Page Composer, App ComposerPL/SQL CodeGroovy Scripts, REST APIs, Cloud FunctionsWorkflowsBPM Workflows, Approval RulesReports (RDF)BI Publisher, OTBI, Fusion Analytics
Understanding these mappings helps scope the effort required and guides design decisions in the cloud environment.
5. Document, Rationalize, and Get Stakeholder Buy-in
Create a detailed Customization Assessment Register that includes:
Custom object name
Purpose
Business owner
Migration decision (Migrate, Replace, Retire)
Notes on implementation approach
Review it with stakeholders and functional leads to ensure alignment before proceeding with design or development in the cloud.
Conclusion
Assessing Oracle EBS customizations is a vital early step in your cloud migration journey. It ensures you're not just copying legacy complexity into a modern platform. By identifying, classifying, and evaluating your customizations thoughtfully, you can take full advantage of Oracle Cloud’s built-in capabilities, reduce future maintenance, and create a cleaner, more agile system.
Start early, collaborate with your business users, and think cloud-first—your future self will thank you.

Addressing Key Challenges of Oracle EBS to Oracle Cloud Migration with Continuous Testing
Undoubtedly, there are numerous benefits of migration from Oracle EBS to Oracle Cloud such as low cost of ownership, scalability, flexibility, and continuous innovation. However, for business users and owners, business continuity is of great importance since inaccurate Oracle Cloud migration can lead to business disruption and risks. Oracle Cloud migration can be a very painful experience and cost you revenue as well as a reputation if performed incorrectly. To ensure that applications are stable, functional, and secure in the new Oracle Cloud environment, you need to bring in a robust testing strategy. Testing ensures that data flow is constant, backend processes are working fine with all compliance and security requirements in place.
In this article, we will address key concerns of managers and business owners who are looking to migrate to Oracle Cloud Apps from Oracle EBS. We will also discuss how a “Risk-based Test” focussed Oracle Cloud migration strategy can help you in keeping business risks at bay.
Key points need to be considered while designing Oracle Cloud migration testing strategy
Existing Integrations – Many of the enterprises have integrated productivity tools such as Google Docs, payroll services, 3Pl, or Microsoft Office 365 to EBS. Key managers need to plan the testing across process integration, adapter related, runtime issues, & file-server related.
Existing Customizations – Customers have changed/evolved the EBS flows. However, Oracle Cloud offers only configurations and limited customizations. So, enterprises may need to adapt some of the business flows available in Oracle Cloud. Regress testing can only ensure that whether or not new workflows support day-to-day operations.
Workflows and Approvals – In EBS, workflows can be customized. However, in Oracle Cloud, the approvals are configured using Oracle Business Process Management (BPM) cloud service. From data validation and verification to regulatory compliance and security roles, all needs to be validated. This can only be achieves with security testing.
Test Data Management – Enterprises often face a shortage of realistic information to execute successful testing. In the case of Oracle Cloud Apps, transactions contain sensitive information. At times, testing teams do not have the access to transactional data and the tools to extract the data sources. So, enterprises need to make provision of high-quality data with the right quantity and format so that successful testing can be executed.
Thus, your testing strategy should be woven around
Configuration Testing – One of the key focus areas of testing should be around configurations and their testing. Few examples are listed below.
Ledger configuration
Sub-ledger accounting rules
Tax geographies
Organization geographies
Business Process Testing – Critical business processes and workflows need to be validated. Cross platform compatibility needs to be tested and it should be validated that objects are working as expected.
Integration Testing – Integration testing ensures that the interactions between different units such as third-party applications, productivity tools, and legacy software across Oracle Cloud is completed smoothly without any complication.
Security Testing – Undoubtedly, Oracle Cloud offers good security standards, but enterprises still need to implement additional controls around security and visibility. These data security policies, and secure configurations need to be validated to ensure compliance requirements.
Problem with conventional testing approaches
Traditional testing methodology involves testing at the end of development activity. In this, you’ll get to know about bugs at very late stage. If critical bugs are discovered late, it may lead to too much of rework, redesign and rethinking of strategy. The end result would be it will adversely impact time to market. The ideal approach is to start testing as soon as possible. To transform your enterprise, you need to transform your testing strategy.
Introduce Continuous Testing into your development
Continuous testing is all about testing early and often. In this, unit tests are executed continuously to check the build and feedback is provided continuously to the Dev team. Continuous testing helps managers to make informed decisions to optimize the value of a release. Continuous testing offers several benefits some of which are listed below.
Improved efficiency and time savings
Early identification of defects
Faster responsiveness to changing business demands
Improved accuracy in identifying defects
Quicker time to market
Superior customer experience
However, continuous testing cannot be implemented without test automation. To introduce continuous testing in development, executives and managers have to introduce automation and leverage tools available for environment provisioning to test continuously at the developer-machine level. With the right test automation tool, you can have testing running in parallel with the development. All this will save time and money, while helping you to stick to your timelines.
The proposed test automation solution should be
Zero/ Low Code – Zero/ low code test automation platforms save lot of time in test script creation as simple play-back recorder can be used to create test scripts. Everyone in your organization can use such tool to test application.
Testing smartly with AI –Since AI based testing tool can understand the intended use of an application, they can create test cases to deliver stable results. AI-powered UI testing offers more accurate visual validation.
Ease of maintenance & Reusability – There is huge cost involved in test script recreation. By bringing test automation tools that automatically heal test scripts, you can save huge time and money. Tools that leverage machine learning and AI technologies for managing, healing, and maintaining application objects and elements in test suites can help in minimizing the test creation and execution efforts.
Stay ahead of the curve with OpKey
OpKey is a Continuous Oracle Cloud Testing Platform that enables Oracle Cloud customers to leverage test automation to take full advantage of continuous innovation. As a globally recognized zero code test automation platform for Oracle Cloud Apps, OpKey dramatically reduces testing time and efforts while offering better test coverage to reduce defects.

Evolving Technology Trends in Self Service HRMS
Enterprises need to build HRMS services with capabilities that is essential in the current business environment. Businesses need to emphasize on more agile and scalable solutions. Technology has moved from mobile to cloud and there is an explosion in analytics and artificial intelligence (AI). The emergence of newer tools for HR professionals has proved to be a boon as it helps in making better human resources decisions.
The Evolving Technology Trends
With the quest to improve and desire to stay at the top, enterprises bank upon technology to implement cutting-edge solutions. Over the last couple of years, enterprise mobile apps have done a remarkable job in improving employee productivity and reducing infrastructure costs. To stay ahead of the technology curve, enterprises have to take a step forward and revamp their mobile suite with the following latest technology trends:
Chatbots
Chatbot is a program conducting conversation in the form of a text or audio. Chatbots can take instructions from the users and execute various transactions. It proves to be appropriate for making the HRMS mobile app as a self-service app. Some of the typical user scenarios that can be automated with Chatbots are:
Call center help desk: You are able to automate the response provided to the employee calls to help desk regarding HR, Accounts, Admin or Payroll concerns. A simple use case will be that an employee can get details about the per diem policy of the company for business visits.
Chatbot approvals: A chat requesting an approval of a record change or leave application can be sent to a manager for approval. Manager can interact with the Chabot and take informed decision.
Analytics: Chatbots can collect real-time analytics to figure out what kind of queries are appearing frequently. This helps the HR admin to make necessary amendments in the process or take informed decisions to resolve the high priority concerns.
Form filling: HR department often requires the employees to fill lengthy forms. The same can be automated with Chatbots. It can fill forms and at the same time, provide answers to related queries.
Touch ID Login
Get rid of the task of remembering passwords and login with biometric fingerprint authentication technology. A user can configure both left and right thumb prints on the phone and can securely login to application.
Unified SSO Login
Create highly scalable mobile app with a unified SSO login that can create an authentication session which enables the app to talk to different backend systems, simultaneously. SSO mechanism, like ADFS, establishes an identity federation by implementing a trust between security realms of multiple systems. This is achieved by implementing federation servers, one each, on accounts and resources side. The federation server on the accounts side will authenticate the user through active directory domain services and issue a security token that will contain identity and claims about the user. The federation server on the resources side will validate the security token and will, in turn, give another token for the local servers to accept user’s asserted identity and provide controlled access to their resources and services.
Usage Analytics
Monitor app performance and take proactive steps to ensure better usage and high adoption. Mobile backend systems, like MCS, provide analytics API that can integrate with mobile app code to log transactions in the form of events. The mobile backend receives events from mobile app in the form of REST calls along with JSON payload, which provides contextual information like a user’s location, the start and end of a user session, and details about the user’s mobile device. Mobile developer could use various SDK options to customize the REST / JSON payload calls in order to generate specific analytics reports, via Oracle MCS. The analytics reports plots the frequency of incoming events versus the specified time periods. Some of the examples of reports are:
API call count
API response time
New users
Active users
Session count
Session duration
User retention with funnel analysis
Apart from the reports, a developer can write custom code to get specific information from the HR data. Some of the sample scenarios can be:
Absence management: Custom report dashboard can send alerts for increase in sick leaves. A rise in ‘sick leave’ absence request API calls can be an alarm for disease spreading. The HR admin can take appropriate measures regarding hygiene or employee vaccination decisions based on such leave trends.
Benefits administration: By analyzing custom reports depicting the trends in benefits plan enrollment in terms of API calls and time of the year, HR admin can decide on strategizing various discounts on bundled health plan enrollments to ensure comprehensive and economic coverage for employees.
Push Notifications
Improve enterprise communication; make enterprise level announcements as a pop-up on employee’s mobile device. Users do not have to be logged into the app or use their devices to receive them. Notifications can provide timely awareness about tax documents, submission deadline, information update, holidays, appraisal cycles, missed weekly time entries etc. to:
A specific device ID or a collection of device IDs
A specific user or a collection of users
All users and devices associated with a specific mobile backend
Devices or users for a given operating system (iOS, Android or Windows)
Chat messaging along with video conferences
Ensure prompt and encrypted communication between employees with enterprise chat messaging available on company network or VPN or over the internet. An employee can directly ping or make a video /audio call to anyone after searching through employee directory in HRMS app.
Oracle HRMS App
HRMS mobile app, pre-loaded with the above mentioned features, sums up to be a powerful self-service solution. The app seamlessly integrates with Oracle EBS, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards and other existing enterprise systems. The product focuses on enhancing employee productivity by automating back office functions along with informed business decision -making and improved collaboration from anywhere, anytime. The modular approach in developing the app allows it to be easily adapted to the client’s corporate design, themes, logos, custom functionalities and special security requirements like MDM wrapping, API gateway integration and SSO login.
HRMS self-service product is ideal for customers who need a comprehensive solution to automate self-service process in a quick, scalable and secure manner. The app is built on cross-platform ionic framework and the front-end and back-end code is carefully written to ensure modularity of individual functionalities. Commonly used directives like attachment, fingerprint login with SSO, chats and PDF reader are created in such a manner that they can be reused as plugins.
The app can easily accommodate the varied tech stack availability of an enterprise. It is highly compatible with cloud-based (Oracle MCS/ ICS) or on-premise (custom Java / OSB/ BizTalk) Middleware options. Security for enterprise database is ensured with VPN connections and reverse proxy servers in the DMZ layer. The app can be wrapped easily with MDM certificate to allow better enterprise control on devices. The loosely coupled functionalities of the app supports easy scaling up. And can add more functionalities like appraisal management, employee expense claim, recruitments etc.
Other Key Features of the App
View and edit employee profile
View and edit employee personal information
Benefits administration
Effective leave planning using team calendar
View absence summary and details
Absence dashboard
Apply and approve absence
Employee directory along with organization chart
Manage notifications
View pay slips
Maintain document of records
Multi language support
Time-entry
SIT and EIT’s
Offline review
Conclusion
These latest technology trends are considered to provide scalable access to organizational information in real-time. The technologies help to bridge the communication gap by allowing immediate access to crucial information at all times. The concept of Chatbots is sure to gain momentum as they rise in popularity. Tasks that needs analysis and reasoning, and are backed by sufficient data can be interfaced with users using message bots. The technology trends are the future for many time-consuming tasks that will be handled in a convenient and hassle-free manner. HRMS app is sure to benefit the employees.
